Test guide
Hepatitis C Virus RNA Quantification
Confirms active hepatitis C infection and verifies cure after treatment.
What it is for
A reactive HCV antibody screen requires HCV RNA to confirm active infection. Quantitative RNA sets the baseline before direct-acting antiviral therapy, and sustained virologic response is confirmed by undetectable RNA at week 12 after treatment completion.
Limitations
Antibody-positive but RNA-negative means resolved past infection, not immunity. False-low results can occur with poor specimen handling; the assay cannot determine genotype unless a separate assay is run.
Before you test
For individuals: one blood draw confirms whether the virus is present. If you have ever injected drugs or received a blood transfusion before screening, discuss testing with your clinician.
