Test guide
Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG, Pregnancy Test)
The hormone detected by pregnancy tests; also used in medicine to assess certain pregnancies and tumours.
What it is for
Confirms pregnancy, supports early evaluation of suspected ectopic pregnancy alongside ultrasound, and monitors certain gestational trophoblastic and germ-cell tumours. Quantitative testing complements the rapid qualitative test when clinical questions require numbers.
Limitations
A negative result shortly after a missed period may be a false negative if testing is too early or urine is dilute. Elevated hCG without pregnancy requires clinical follow-up. Quantitative interpretation requires serial measurements and clinical correlation, never a single value in isolation.
Before you test
For urine testing, first morning urine gives the most concentrated sample. Note the first day of the last menstrual period.
