Test guide
Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT)
A stool test detecting hidden blood from the lower bowel; the main screening entry point for colorectal cancer programmes.
What it is for
Supports population colorectal cancer screening and the triage of lower-bowel symptoms, with positive results leading to colonoscopy. Quantitative FIT allows programmes to set and audit their own referral thresholds.
Limitations
Detects blood from the lower bowel only; upper-gastrointestinal bleeding is poorly represented. A negative test does not exclude neoplasia and screening must repeat at programme intervals. Some programs report values quantitatively; thresholds differ between programmes and are not interchangeable.
Before you test
Follow the collection kit instructions exactly (sample number and timing). Some foods and medications may need pausing per kit guidance.
