Indicators
The fat soluble vitamin retinol. Vitamin A binds to and activates retinoid receptors (RARs), thereby inducing cell differentiation and apoptosis of some cancer cell types and inhibiting carcinogenesis. Vitamin A plays an essential role in many physiologic processes, including proper functioning of the retina, growth and differentiation of target tissues, proper functioning of the reproductive organs, and modulation of immune function.
Tests
The determination of the amount of retinol binding protein 1 in a sample.
Tests
The determination of the amount of retinol binding protein 2 in a sample.
Tests
The determination of the amount of retinol binding protein 4 in a sample.
Tests
The determination of the amount of retinol binding protein present in a sample.
Tests
The determination of the ratio of retinol binding protein compared to creatinine present in a sample. The measurement may be expressed as a ratio or percentage.
Glossary Term
A genetic process in which single-stranded RNA with base sequence complementary to a region of plus strand DNA is synthesized by DNA-dependent RNA polymerases. Following the binding of RNA polymerase on DNA promoter regions, the RNA product is synthesized in a 5' to 3' direction, elongating RNA along the DNA strand as the polymerase proceeds, accompanied by unwinding and rewinding of the DNA template.
Indicators
Transthyretin (147 aa, ~16 kDa) is encoded by the human TTR gene. This protein is involved in both the binding and transport of retinol and thyroxine.
