Indicator Explainer
CMV DNA
Quantitative marker of cytomegalovirus replication used in transplant and immunocompromised care.
This page explains what the indicator is and how results are interpreted in general terms. Reference ranges depend on the laboratory, the method, and your own situation — no single “normal value” applies to everyone. This page is health information, not a diagnosis. For symptoms, treatment, or urgent concerns, contact a healthcare professional.
When it is tested
Measured by quantitative plasma PCR to guide pre-emptive therapy and treatment response in transplant recipients and other immunosuppressed patients.
Reading results
Results are reported in copies or IU per mL and trends over time matter more than any single value; units and calibrators differ between platforms, so serial results should stay on one system where possible. Reference laboratories define their own thresholds and reporting formats.
Questions to ask a professional
- Which unit system and calibration does this laboratory use?
- How quickly are results turned around during treatment monitoring?
