The determination of the ratio of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) compared to aspartate aminotransferase (AST) present in a sample. The measurement may be expressed as a ratio or percentage.
Glossary Term
A volatile liquid prepared by fermentation of certain carbohydrates. Alcohol acts as a central nervous system (CNS) depressant, a diuretic, and a disinfectant. Although the exact mechanism of CNS depression is unknown, alcohol may act by inhibiting the opening of calcium channels, mediated by the binding of the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) to GABA-A receptors, or through inhibitory actions at N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-type glutamate receptors. Alcohol inhibits the production of antidiuretic hormone, thereby producing diuresis that may lead to dehydration. This agent kills organisms by denaturing their proteins.
Indicators
A family of pyridoxal phosphate-dependent enzymes involved in amino acid metabolism and in the urea and tricarboxylic acid cycles. Aspartate aminotransferase specifically and reversibly catalyzes the transfer of an amino group from L-aspartate to alpha-ketoglutarate forming oxaloacetate and L-glutamate.
Tests
The determination of the amount of aspartate aminotransferase isoenzyme C present in a sample.
Tests
The determination of the amount of aspartate aminotransferase isoenzyme M present in a sample.
Tests
A quantitative measurement of aspartate aminotransferase present in a sample.
Tests
The determination of the ratio of aspartate aminotransferase compared to creatinine present in a sample. The measurement may be expressed as a ratio or percentage.
Tests
An AST blood test measures the amount of AST in your blood. This test is commonly used to help diagnose liver damage or disease .
Indicators
A non-essential amino acid. In hepatocytes, L-citrulline is synthesized in the urea cycle by the addition of carbon dioxide and ammonia to ornithine. L-citrulline is converted into L-arginine by the enzymes argininosuccinate synthetase and argininosuccinate lyase in the presence of L-aspartate and ATP. Subsequently, L-arginine is converted to nitric oxide by nitric oxide synthase and L-citrulline is regenerated as a by-product.
