Glossary Term
Any mutation with an origin in cells that are not destined to become gametes. As a consequence, such mutations are not transmitted to progeny, though they will be transmitted during any mitosis within the individual. Somatic mutations may contribute to a broad variety of pathologies including cancer.

Indicators
Somatostatin (116 aa, ~13 kDa) is encoded by the human SST gene. This protein plays a role in the downregulation of somatotropin release.
Indicators
Somatotropin (217 aa, ~25 kDa) is encoded by the human GH1 gene. This protein is involved in the regulation of many physiologic processes, including the growth of organs and tissues and the metabolism of amino acids and proteins.
Indicators
This gene is involved in guanine nucleotide exchange.
Indicators
This gene is involved in embryonic development and in the determination of cell fate.

Glossary Term
Any mutation that occurs within the discrete sequences comprising the 5' or 3' splice sites of a gene that has a spliced message. Splice-site mutation may result in a deletion or insertion of extraneous amino acids in the gene product or a change in the reading frame of the spliced message.
Pcr Terms
Indicators
This gene is involved in protein ubiquitination, which often leads to proteasomal degradation.
Tests
A sputum culture is a test that checks for bacteria or another type of germ that may be causing a respiratory tract infection (an infection in your lungs or airways). Sputum, also known as phlegm, is a thick type of mucus made in your lungs. If you have an infection or chronic illness affecting the lungs or airways, sputum can settle in your lungs, and you may also cough it up
